I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
This week we read and discussed the poem "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou. I am interested in your response to this text. You could comment on one or more of the following providing evidence and analysis from the poem or biography: your favorite line and why you like it, mood, characteristics, a text to text connection, a metaphor that was interesting to you, if you feel the poem is autobiographical or how growing up during the Civil Rights Movement affected her writing. I really like reading all your amazing blogs! Miss Torii

The mood of this poem is sad. My evidence is stanza 5, line 1 it says," But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams." This mean, the caged bird was the black race being help black from freedom by their skin color. They had dreams but they was trapped, discriminated. That why they are grave of dreams.

Deletei agree with Arlete because in all the poem the mood is sad but specally in stanza 5 line 1 and 2 it says:''But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams, his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream''. I think these lines discribe how sad the bird was suffered and what it feels locked in that cage
DeleteThe author use metaphors. On stanza 6 it says, "for the caged bird sings of freedom." I believe that the author use the birds as a metaphor to explain how her life was like a birds and i think she said that because she need freedom for her self.
ReplyDeleteyes , i agree with Belinda,The author used metaphors. for example, in the poem on second stanza, says" his wings are clipped and his feet are tied".this means she felt that was her fault, because her uncle kill her mother boyfriend. like i the biography says" Angelou became mute, believing,as she has stated, and her voice killed her sister boyfriend."
Deletei agree with Belinda because Maya Angelou used metaphors to express her feelings in other way. she wanted to free her mind about suffering and she choose to write.

ReplyDeleteI agree with mariama. they both used to write the poems to reflect their life. me too. when I wrote my poem "life", I was inspire by my own life.
Deletethis poem is came from the ispiration of civil war. my evidence is in 6 last line its says , he sing from fredoom . this mean May want same liberty of her life she fells like she was in prison . she want to be free from same reason
ReplyDeletei agree with Maria busta bon.in stanza 5 line 2 it said," but a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams.." this mean the author suffer she want to but she can't start to fall now.
Deletei agree with you Maria this poem is came from the inspiration of civil war.on stanza 2 line 5 and 6 she wrote," his wings are clipped and his feet are tied". I beleive the civil right is a connection.
DeleteManya Angelou wrote "i know Why the Caged Bird Sings" this is an example of autobiographical and metaphor poem. My evidence is in her biography second paragrah it states. "at age eight, while living with her mother, Angelou was sexually abused" she reflect her suffering life in her early years. she reflect her suffering like a bird locked in her cage looking for freedom.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Cesar because it is hard when someone raped by a step-father. That's can change someone life forever that's why Angelou think she was not free and her was a sad story.
Deletewhen i read this poem i had a text to world connection. This reminds me a girl when i went to church. she talked about how her mom was sexually abused and raped.
ReplyDeleteon stanza 3 line 1 it said"The caged bird sings with fearful trill of the thinks unknown." i think Maya is sad she want to know the nature she want to be free like the orther birds she need liberty.

ReplyDeletelast wekk in Miss Torii's class we read a poem the title was i know why the caged bird sings. in stanza 2 line 5 to 7 the authors says"his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing". i think she used this metaphor because she wanted to show how she was suffer, how she was control and how she wanted to get her freedom.
DeleteI think the mood of the poem is sad. on stanza3 it said,"The caged bird sings, with fearful trill" this means the bird in the cage, it do not have freedom, and it is sad.
ReplyDeleteI think the mood, of this poem is sad and inspirational, because on the biography says,"Angelou was sexually abused and reped by her mother boyfriend". this means she write, this poem to let people know her background, that she sufferd when she was a little girls.....
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Clecio, but u think the mood is sadness, for me it definitely sadness like if I was treated like that when I was lilte when I read this poem I will be cry, but I was not and I read this poem I feel everything about her like I was see everything.
Deletewhen i read the poem, i make a connection with Invictus. My evidence is in in stanza 5, line 3, it says " his wings are clipped and his feet are tied." That means William Henley and Maya Angelou both suffered in their life. They had experiences that inspire them to wrote about their suffering.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mariama ba Because the connection is good for William Henley the both was suffered about his life.
DeleteLast weeek we read a poem I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. This poem is a autobiographical. My evidence on Stanza 5 line 1. But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams. I believe she wanted the freedom but she cannot have it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Christlove. My evidence is on stanza 6, line 8
ReplyDeleteit says,"Sings of Freedom." This mean, Angela want to be free, she feel like the caged bird without freedom.
I liked to read this poem because I can compare what the author says with what happened with Civil Rights movement, both wanted freedom and in the poem the bird wants freedom because I belive it was the bird dream like it was Martin Luther King dream have freedom to their people.
ReplyDeletei agree with belinda. my evidence is in stanza 6 line 7 and 8. the caged bird of freedom. i think too the authors used this metaphor to explian her feeling because she was control by freedom. she did not know anything in the world but she wanted to get it.
ReplyDeleteThe poem is a autobiography because in biography of Angelou in paragraph 2 line 1 and 2 the author said the first 17 years of Angelou's life are documented in her first autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird sings. I believe that Angelou start suffer very yojng, but at 17 she get a opportunity to write this poem about her life how she was suffering in her life.
ReplyDeleteThe mood of this poem is sad in line 5,"the bird stand on the grave of the dreams." this means, someone have a dream he won't ever realize in his life.
